WNPA Election 2013 Begins

Notices were sent out by e-mail to all registered WNPA members Sunday evening, inviting them to vote in the 2013 WNPA Officer Election from May 20-31. The election is being conducted online via a service called BallotBin. If you are a WNPA member and did not receive an email notice inviting you to vote, please contact Secretary Michael P. King.

All candidates are unopposed, but write-in votes are welcome. Running for President is Lukas Keapproth, a staff photographer at the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Running for Vice-President is Cory Dellenbach, photo editor at COLE Publishing in Three Lakes, Wis. Jim Matthews of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, and Michael P. King of the Wisconsin State Journal are running for reelection for Treasurer and Secretary, respectively.

How to enter:

1) Prepare your files.

Filenaming is very critical because if you upload two images with the same file name, one will be overwritten. To solve this, please follow the following naming convention to ensure everyone has unique file names:

Start with the two letter category code followed by an underscore:

Spot news = sn_ General news = gn_ Feature = fe_ Multiple = mu_ Illustration = il_ Sports = sp_ Portrait = po_

Then follow it by your first initial, then your middle initial then your last name. If you have more than one photo in a category follow it by a number. For example:

Jon Doe Smith enters two photos in the spot news category:

sn_jdsmith1.jpg sn_jdsmith2.jpg

Please number your multiple category pictures in the order you want judges to view them. If you have more than 10 photos make sure they go 01, 02, 03…09, 10, 11, etc.

2) Go to airdropper.com/wnpaonline and for the password, type in the month of you want to submit to:

This will then take you to the upload page where you can upload all the files you have for that month all at once.

2012 WNPA POY and Multimedia Results

Gregory Shaver of The Journal-Times is the 2012 WNPA Photographer of the Year, and also won Best of Show. John Hart of the Wisconsin State Journal was awarded First Place in the portfolio category. Kristyna Wentz-Graff of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel placed first in the Best Multimedia Story category.

The 2012 Pictures of the Year contest was judged Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel by photojournalists Jim Slosiarek of The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Ia., and Keri Wiginton and Scott Strazzante of the Chicago Tribune.

2012 WNPA Student POY Results

Kyle Grillot, a summer intern for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and a recent Ohio University graduate, is the 2012 WNPA Student Photographer of the Year. Runner-up Meg Vogel, a summer intern for The Post-Crescent and also an Ohio University student, was awarded Best of Show.

The 2012 Student Pictures of the Year contest was judged Friday, April 26, 2013, at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel by Milwaukee editorial and portrait photographer Jessica Kaminski, photo editor and educator John Klein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and photojournalist Dan Powers of The Post-Crescent in Appleton.

Pitch in! Officer nominations accepted April 1-15

We are accepting nominations from April 1 to April 15 for WNPA officer elections (President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary). You can nominate yourself or others below in the comments area, or email Secretary Michael King. The deadline is midnight April 15. The election will be held online May 1-15. All positions are one-year terms.

The President guides and oversees WNPA according to our mission and vision, delegating and assisting in the planning of events that meet the needs of our members. The vice-president holds many of the same duties, filling in for the president as needed. Together, the President and VP build a network of volunteers across the state to plan and execute organization events throughout the year. The Treasurer handles the organization’s finances, accepting dues and fees, tracking and paying our expenses, and looking forward to budget for our financial health and viability. The Secretary serves as chief of the organization’s communication efforts between officers, members, non-members and the general public (also coordinates website and social media outreach, and First Amendment/advocacy efforts).

POY and Student POY Judging Details

Keri Wiginton and Scott Strazzante of the Chicago Tribune, as well as Jim Slosiarek of The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Ia., have been selected to judge the 2012 WNPA POY Contest at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (333 W. State St., Milwaukee, WI 53203) on Saturday, April 27, 2013, beginning at 10 a.m.

Wiginton (bio) (website) (blog) joined the Tribune in 2012 after starting her career at the St. Petersburg Times in Florida. Strazzante (bio) (blog), a graduate of Ripon College, joined the Tribune in 2001 after 15-years of work at smaller Illinois dailies such as The Daily Calumet, the Daily Southtown, and the Joliet Herald-News. Slosiarek (bio) has distinctly Wisconsin roots, working previously at the Waukesha Freeman, Community Newspapers Inc., and the Journal Times in Racine.

The Student POY Contest will also be judged at the Journal Sentinel building, but on Friday, April 26, 2013, and beginning at 9 a.m. It will be judged by local editorial and portrait photographer Jessica Kaminski (bio) (website) (lighting education site), photo editor and educator John Klein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (gallery), and photojournalist Dan Powers (blog) (recent work) of The Post-Crescent in Appleton.

WNPA strongly encourages in-person attendance at the judgings, as they are both open to the public, and highly visual and educational.
