George Hodgman, a former New York book editor moved went back to his hometown of Paris, Missouri to take care of his ailing elderly mother Betty, a woman who never accepted or much acknowledged he was gay. Inspired by his experiences growing up gay in a small, but welcoming Midwestern town, and his interactions with his mother, Hodgman wrote a memoir he titled "Bettyville," which rocketed up to best-seller status.
