WNPA’s annual business meeting – held Sunday, March 17 in Oshkosh – attracted a dozen members and volunteers from the Madison, Racine, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay and Manitowoc areas. The group spent almost five hours together, reviewing the results of a 2012 membership survey and hashing out a solid plan to restore WNPA’s vibrancy across the state, and improve its financial health.

Part of improving WNPA’s financial health was a difficult decision to forgo a 2013 convention, and instead direct the Board to form a committee to properly plan a Spring 2014 event. The committee will be formed after WNPA elections in May. Their first order of business will be to decide a date and location for the event, with an announcement made by Sept. 1, 2013.

Increasing WNPA’s presence year-round and statewide was a priority in discussions, Sunday, recognizing the necessity to offer members more benefits for their membership fees. In late 2013 and going forward, WNPA plans on organizing quarterly, regional, social and mentoring events. The activities will benefit students and professionals, alike, offering networking opportunities and education through shadowing, portfolio reviews or small workshops. The organization is seeking a volunteer to coordinate this initiative.

In the future, you’ll want to start checking out our website and social media channels more frequently. Soon, we’ll begin featuring more of our members’ work on our website and offer periodic features on staffs and visual journalists from around the state.

Elections for WNPA officers (president, vice president, treasurer and secretary) will be from May 1-15. The deadline for nominations, or self-nominations, will be April 15.

Pursuant to WNPA’s constitution, members present at the business meeting proposed and voted on dues amounts for 2014 calendar year memberships. They unanimously approved the following structure:

•Students/Educators/Retirees Full Membership – $20 – includes 1-year of membership, access to WNPA monthly clip contest and local events, SPOY or POY annual contest fee, and annual convention registration fee.

•Professional Basic Membership – $40 – includes 1-year of membership, access to WNPA monthly clip contest and local events (POY contest fee, or convention attendance are available a la carte for $20 each)

•Professional Full Membership – $65 (best value) – includes 1-year of membership, access to WNPA monthly clip contest and local events, POY annual contest fee, and annual convention registration fee.

A “membership year” runs from Jan. 1 – Dec. 31. Dues are due by Feb. 1 of the membership year. Dues paid after May 31 will be prorated 50%.

Those in attendance also voted unanimously to rename the Student POY Best of Show Award. It is now the Phil Ejercito Best of Show Award, posthumously honoring Ejercito, a WNPA student member who recently passed away.

Thank you to Tim Gleason and UW-Oshkosh’s School of Journalism for being gracious hosts to the meeting at Sage Hall.
